Why were William Cullen Bryant, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, John Greenleaf Whittier, Oliver Wendell Holmes, and James Russell Lowell known as "The Fireside Poets"? America's Romantic poets were known as the fireside poets because their poems were shared by families as entertainment in front of the fireplace. Their poems covered a wide variety of themes and were immensely popular among intellectuals as well as the less educated.
